Tech Quick Tips
Internet Speed - Are you getting what you PAY for?

Check your internet speed

It never hurts to know exactly how fast your internet is and whether or not your getting what you pay for. Most internet providers will have a 10-20% variable factor when gauging speed, and they may require that you use the company approved speed rating tool. Both tools can be used with nearly any browser.

ITDefenses uses two different tools to verify actual delivery of speed. Using either of these two tools should be done when your company load has the lightest load use since workstations can take up bandwidth.

Internet Access Speeds
With many internet services you will find that fiber optic lines can offer the fastest service for both upload and download speeds. While non-fiber lines can produce substantial download speeds the upload speed is very limited to 1-50Mbps. When you have five or more users the use of fiber type lines is highly recommended with a minimum of 500Mbps Download Speed and 125MBps Upload Speed. If you are using a web based application for your business with 2 or more users anything less than these specifications can cause lagging.

Download SpeedUpload SpeedUsers Supported Speed Summary
25 Mbps 01-4Mbps 1-2 Entry Level
100 Mbps05-10Mbps 3-4 Average
200 Mbps11-15Mbps 4-5 Above Average
500 Mbps 12-125Mbps 5+ Very Fast
1000 Mbps 25-900Mbps 5+ Gigabit

Two things to look at when it comes to your internet health:

Download Speed The higher your Download Speed the faster your downloads will go and the faster your web pages will load. If you computer is getting to the 3-5 years of age, you may want to consider upgrading to a newer computer or update your system to more memory and faster hard drives.

Upload Speed for conferencing or hosting needs, the faster your UPLOAD Speed the faster you can up-load video, pictures, files and other items to your receiver at the other end. Having a huge download speed with minimal 1-25mb upload speeds can cause issues and extended wait times when doing conferencing or other duties that require faster upload speeds.
